of the constitution wanted to create a society that was fair and provided men with freedom. In fact, many refer to the Constitution as a living document, and something that
has been the best constitution in the world thus far, and one that provides opportunities for all. Yet, there are people who criticize the U.S. government, contending that it really
just caters to the rich, and ignores the poor. The Ameircan system is thus responsible for a divisive government where the poor become poorer and the rich become wealthier. Michael
Parenti is one author who sees this latter assessment as the case. According to Parenti (2007), those who met in Philadelphia in 1787 to create the Constitution, actually were
responsible for creating a strong centralized government. Charles Beard in 1913 wrote that the framers were actually guided by class considerations (Parenti, 2007). In other words, the society was stratified
and it stayed that way, largely due to the creation of the Constitution. How could that be if the wording suggests that all men are created equal? While it does
seem to be saying that all men are created equal, it means so literally and thus excludes women. Further, it would take amendments down the road to create a society
that embraces both people of color, and women. Although many contend that the Framers were interested in more than just money, Parenti (2007) argues: "That is exactly the point: high-mindedness
is a common attribute among people even when, or especially when, they are pursuing their personal and class interests." In other words, the interest in equality is just a guise.
What they really want is to further their own economic interests. Parenti (2007) writes that the Constitution is a document that is designed as something that looks conservative, but
