Hanna, who is a tired and disillusioned nurse; Caravaggio, who is known as the thief; Kip, who is disenchanted; and the burn victim known simply as the English patient. Throughout the course of this book, the author illustrates how the lives of each of these characters becomes intermingled with the others, thus creating a very distinct bond between them. Ondaatje focuses on many different themes throughout this book, most importantly that of loss and love. Hanna must deal with the loss of her father in addition to the many patients she saw die during her time as a wartime nurse. Kip is an engineer and his life is based upon turmoil and great turbulence. He has to diffuse bombs and the death of Lord Suffolk, his mentor, is a devastating loss to him. Caravagio had both of his thumbs cut off by the Gestapo, and therefore can no longer steal as he once had, which clearly serves to provide much loss, sadness and also reflection. Almasy, also known as the English patient, has lost much during the war, including his flesh, his friends, and even his lover. There is no question that death plays a major role in this story, as evidenced not only by all the dying patients but also through the character of Hanna, who must confront the issue of death in a brutal fashion. Hanna has lost both her father and her love and has therefore come to believe that everyone she comes into contact with is going to die as a result of knowing her.
