the Flint plants, Roger Smith. Moores intention to persuade Smith to visit Flint provides a framework for the film and also is the source of much of its sardonic humor.
Moores search for Roger Smith also gives his documentary its primary cinematic motif. Nichols (1991) points out that the act of recognition establishes a "remarkable hold on the
viewer" (p. 160). The impression of reality conveyed by documentary film relies heavily on the act of recognition and this factor works at several levels (Nichols, 1991). This feature can
work with well-known figures or with individuals known to the audience, but never seen in regards to images on film ( Nichols, 1991). This is the case in regards to
Moores search for Roger Smith, who is a public figure, but not easily recognizable by the general public. In a 2001` essay, Nichols also points out that it is frequently
the goal of narrative in documentary film to "introduce...moralizing perspective or social belief of an author and a structure of closure whereby initiating disturbances can receive satisfactory resolution" (p. 580).
Moores documentary follows this dictum and offers scathing social commentary, demonstrating the flaws in the capitalist system, which often places profit over human welfare. The film opens with Moore,
who is himself the son of a Flint autoworker, reminiscing about growing up in the birthplace of General Motors (Johnson 48). Utilizing archival footage from the 1950s, Moore shows how
