Crichtons work. Summary In this story we are presented with the history of the hospital, which helps to provide a foundation for understanding the medical industry at large.
It tells us about the past of this hospital and then presents us with a very powerful picture of medicine today. We are all aware of the fact that technology
and medical knowledge today is far more advanced than it was in the past, and this is something that Crichton is very intrigued with throughout the book. He illustrates the
new technology and the new methods of approach, astounding the reader with the various information he presents. He also, however, puts a very human face on the work, discussing and
presenting many of the hospital staff as they go about trying to save lives and deal with disease. We see the patients, who will be described in the following section,
come in and all but serve as examples of how the medical industry works. We see people benefiting from the newest technology and knowledge, and in that we are actually
presented with a kind of awe and hope in terms of the medical industry. We are also provided with a look at interns and the entire aspect of learning,
which is a very important element in any hospital setting. New patients provide the opportunity for learning, not only for newer residents, but also for older and more established doctors
