study of semiotics has taken on a psychological dimension as well. This paper discusses semiotics with regard to the Michael Corleone character in The Godfather. Discussion The term "focalization"
with regard to films has a specific meaning; it refers to the "position or angle of vision from which events are viewed" (Stam, Burgoyne and Flitterman-Lewis, 1992, p. 89). In
addition to a strictly visual interpretation, experts have now added the "psychological facet," referring to those situations in which the "cognitive and emotional focus of the text resides with a
particular character (Stam, Burgoyne and Flitterman-Lewis, 1992, p. 89). That is the case with the scene in the hospital in The Godfather, when Michael Corleone suddenly realizes that his father,
who is unconscious and helpless, has been left unguarded (Stam, Burgoyne and Flitterman-Lewis, 1992). The sequence is one of the tensest in the film because the clues are there, but
they are put together slowly: the hospital seems too quite; no one is at the nurses station; theres a half-eaten sandwich on the desk (Dirks, 2008). None of the familys
guards are outside the Dons room and a nurse tells Michael why: "Your father just had too many visitors. They interfered with hospital service. The police made them leave about
ten minutes ago" (Dirks, 2008). The tension is high as Michael suddenly realizes what this all means; then he convinces the nurse to help him move his fathers bed into
another room: "Men are coming here to kill him. You understand?" (Dirks, 2008). She does, and helps him in spite of the fact that shes clearly terrified. In front of
the hospital, Michael foils still another attempt on the Dons life by convincing the would-be killers that he and another man are really armed security guards (Dirks, 2008). He even
