of the recent terrorist attacks, we have had to re-examine our immigration and naturalization policies, and to reevaluate our border patrols and the influx of illegal aliens entering this country.
Furthermore, the ever-increasing numbers of Mexican immigrants who flood to this country on an annual basis requires attention in its own right,
let alone the more dynamic political implications inherent to the situation. Citizenship policy in the United States has been dramatically impacted by Mexican immigration, and whether or not that
impact has been positive or negative is likely to depend upon whom you ask. There are U.S. citizens who feel the policies are not strict enough while a Mexican
man contend that the requirements are nearly inaccessible for them, meaning that so too is citizenship in the United States. Understanding this impact is important to understanding the current
state of citizenship policy in the U.S., which affects all Americans either directly or indirectly. The history of immigration between
the U.S. and Mexico is a long one, and it is a history which reflects the changing attitudes of Americans. While at first we anxiously accepted Mexicans into this
country in an effort to help with the labor shortage situation, we are now in the midst of an anti-immigration period where we believe Mexican immigrants challenge the security and
economic soundness of this country. This evolving sentiment reflects more than just changes in policy, but reflects the changing attitudes of Americans, which in turn is interpreted through policy.
