The years surrounding World War II were turbulent from many perspectives. This was particularly true for the Mexican-American and other recent immigrants to
the United States. Even in the best of times the Mexican family arriving in the U.S. for the first time is often overwhelmed at the culture differences. Even
during the relatively less commercial times of World War II they undoubtedly were in awe over a country where everything was available. These commodities would come at a price
of course. Many times Mexican Americans are frugal and live together in large groups sharing expenses and saving their money for their return to Mexico. Many times they
arent and become entrapped in this country against their will without the resources to go home without the resources to stay. This same scenario was in place during the
war years. For those Mexicans who chose to become American citizens, however, the price of doing so would be even more dear. Many of those Mexican Americans found
themselves serving in a War which was not only far removed from their home county of Mexico but also which was far removed from the shores of the U.S. itself.
Never-the-less, these years became a time of tremendous opportunity for Mexican Americans to escape the social ostracization which had characterized much of their history and to move into mainstream
America both in roles in the military and in filling the occupational chasm created by the War.
