Mexican American culture is at the same time tremendously diverse in comparison to mainstream American culture and much like mainstream culture. Many Mexicans have, in fact, been shaped by American culture long before they immigrate to the country. Never-the-less, the Mexican family arriving in the U.S. for the first time is often overwhelmed at the culture differences. Different individuals, of course, perceive American culture differently just as different individuals place different emphasis on the importance of not only maintaining their own cultural uniqueness but expressing that uniqueness in a world which expects uniformity. Many Mexicans, by necessity, are quite frugal in comparison to mainstream American culture. This is true both economically and, in some ways, culturally. While some feel the need to underplay their Mexican heritage, others express that heritage equally in the states as they did in Mexico. Many chose to live together in large groups sharing expenses and saving their money for their return to Mexico. Many times they arent and become entrapped in this country against their will without the resources to go home without the resources to stay. The irony of the great American dream becomes quickly apparent. Never-the-less, Mexicans continue to seek that dream as a means of escaping the reality of their life in Mexico, a life where one often gets caught or trapped by circumstances. An underlying reality in considering Mexican American culture is that despite the fact that an individual is placed or even born within a particular geographic and cultural space, that space can be one of ambivalence which can exist equally in Mexico and in the glitter of the United States.
