decades; because the combined aspects of population growth, increased numbers of vehicles, neighborhood infiltration and the ever-present car/pedestrian conflict continue to expand, the issues associated with traffic and transportation remain
at the forefront of the communitys concern. According to a poll published in the Vancouver Sun, nearly fifty percent of Lower Mainland residents considered transportation "the most important local
issue facing local residents" (BEST, 2003), even more than the concern over crime, health care and education. That Vancouver continues to grow serves to overburden the public transit system,
worsen congestion and detrimentally impact the environment. Clearly, the relationship between global climate change and the perpetuation of vehicle emissions, types of vehicles manufactured and purchased today, as well
as the overwhelming consumption of fossil fuel is "beginning to be widely understood" (BEST, 2003). With alternative transportation technology "one of the worlds fastest growing fields" (CANMET, 2003) there is
good reason to believe Vancouver will continue to seek out viable options for its primarily diesel-run transit system. Perhaps the most overlooked yet practical alternative gasoline is the implementation
of the hydrogen fuel cell, a concept being looked into as a means by which to fuel the citys significant public transit needs, inasmuch as it could quite possibly be
