based on the "manga" (comic book), which was created by Osamu Tezuka, another revered figures in anime, shortly after World War II (Eagan 68). Rintaro has indicated that he is
familiar with the Fritz Lang film of the same name from 1926, but has commented he tried not to create his film a deliberate inspiration from this film, so that
he and his creative team tried to simply recreate Tesukas comic book (Eagan 68). Nevertheless, Rintaros Metropolis is reminiscent of Langs film, as it also hinges on the
creation of a beautiful robotic woman, Tima, who is envisioned as the pinnacle of evolution (Hunter 20). The film combines hand-drawn animation and modern computer graphics (Eagan 68). Rintaro was
not interested in making a purely digital film, such as Toy Story, but rather wanted to draw on his 40 years of experience with 2D cel animation. In so
doing, Rintaro added a visually symbolic relationship between the two media used in creating this animated feature. An examination of the film reveals how the two forms of animation interact
to underscore the social themes on which the film is based. The beginning of the film features incredible rich, detailed backgrounds in 3D animation, so that the views
of the city have depth. These cityscapes are incredibly beautiful. Although there are futuristic features about the city, it is largely pictured in a manner that is very reminiscent
of 1930s New York, with immense art deco skyscrapers and intricate inlaid marble. It is a strange amalgamation in many ways. For example, there are flying cars, but they
