very idea that Americans have to pass a number of security screenings before they are allowed to board an airplane goes against the values that made the nation what it
is. However, in the hysteria following the September 11 attack, it seems that many citizens were willing to give up many of their civil liberties in order to feel better
about traveling. While the effectiveness of the screening processes is debatable-supporters say, "See, it works, because nothing else has happened," more sophisticated people understand that its not possible to prove
a negative. The fact that there have been no further attacks cannot be taken to prove that the security measures are working. For years, air travelers had to put
their personal possessions on a tray while they walked through a metal detector similar to the ones used in courtrooms. The idea of scanning is still at the heart of
the system, but it has been enhanced and is much more sophisticated. Since 2001, the Transportation Security Administration has been "mandated by law to appropriately screen air travelers to ensure
that certain items and persons prohibited from flying dont board commercial airliners" (Passenger screening). TSA has more than 43,000 "trained and certified Transportation Security Officers" at more than 450 U.S.
airports (Passenger screening). The security officers, along with over 1,000 other "credentialed security inspectors" screen more than two million passengers per day (Passenger screening). Screening passengers involves three primary
steps: the x-ray machine, the walk-through metal detector; and any additional screening that may be needed (Passenger security checkpoints). At the x-ray machine, travelers are required to place all their
carry-on baggage and any items they are carrying flat on the belt of the machine (Passenger security checkpoints). TSA has published specific instructions for passengers as to how to prepare
