2007). In this method, the creator of a test simply understands what it is that he or she wants to measure, and then develops items that are directly intended to
measure that (Hogan, 2007). This may seem overly simplistic and straightforward, but in fact, this is one of the key strengths of this methodology. It tends to be a highly
valid way of structuring a psychological test because it is almost always assured that the items will effectively measure the trait in question because of the simplistic link between them.
Another method is the criterion-keying method. In this approach, the items that appear on an objective psychological test are designed in such a way as to emphasize the differences
between two primary categories of test-takers (Hogan, 2007). For instance, if one was developing an objective test to distinguish between "normal" people and people with depression, one might use a
criterion-keying approach to create items that ask about the distinctions between those two categories of people in a direct way; the result of such items is that individuals taking the
test will ultimately be associated with one of the two broad categories defining the items. Another important method of test development is the factor analysis method. In this method,
one identifies the "dimensions underlying a large number of observations" (Hogan, 2007). For instance, one might begin with a huge number of items and over time gradually achieved a superior
understanding of the relationship between items until such a point that the items on the test develop a synergistic ability to convey information due to being uniquely tied to the
most fundamental and significant factors of a given observation (Hogan, 2007). This is a time-consuming method to construct, but can be quite efficient. One other test construction method worth
