in connection with their work. When considering how decision-making, problem solving and the assessment of behaviour can occur in a business setting the role of ethics may be seen in
both general terms as well as with the specific use of a code of ethics. A code of ethics can act as a
framework and a guide when planning and assessing options and/or events. In order to consider how a code of ethics can be useful we first need to consider what is
meant by ethics in order to apply it to real life. The concept of a code of ethics is well entrenched within a
commercial environment. Ethics are the principles by which individuals groups or organisations should behave; they lay down a system or theory for behaviour and moral values. Therefore, a code of
ethics will set out expectations and guidelines to ensure moral or correct conduct. Ethics can be defined as "that branch of philosophy dealing with values relating to human conduct,
with respect to the rightness and wrongness of certain actions and to the goodness and badness of the motives and ends of such actions" (Dictionary.com, 2007).
However, determining what is right and wrong is not always easy as there may be conflicting issues present in any decision.
