2006). In fact, according to some reports use of meth has increased among adolescents since then and it is considered to be "a substantial threat to public health in
the United States" (Barclay and Lie, 2006). Use among high school seniors was estimated at 4.3 percent in 2000 and at 6.2 percent in 2004 (Barclay and Lie, 2006). Adolescents
who live in "rural areas and small towns are especially vulnerable due to powerful peer influences" (Barclay and Lie, 2006; also see Ferlazzo, 2006). This is an incredibly dangerous drug
with numerous negative effects. Ferlazzo (2006) says that meth "can impair social functioning and cause a wide variety of health problems" (p. 876). Because of its prevalence and the devastating
effects of using this drug, prevention must be a primary emphasis in all communities (Ferlazzo, 2006). At this time, one study is being highly publicized as being effective in
preventing the use of methamphetamine among our young people (Barclay and Lie, 2006; Ferlazzo, 2006; National Institutes of Health, 2006). Actually, two studies were conducted by Dr. Spoth and colleagues
at Iowa State University in Ames (Ferlazzo, 2006). These were large studies that followed the students through high school (Ferlazzo, 2006). The first study included 667 sixth-graders who were assigned
to one of three groups, one of which was a control group with 208 students in it (Ferlazzo, 2006). The rest of the group were divided between participating in the
Iowa Strengthening Families Program or in the Preparing for the Drug-Free Years program (Ferlazzo, 2006). Programs included 238 and 221 students, respectively (Ferlazzo, 2006). A follow-up involving 457 families was
