problem. This paper argues in favor of legislation dealing with the "meth" epidemic. Argument The paper argues that the problem is of such scope that it demands action on a
national level, and that the U.S. needs to enact legislation for methamphetamine offenders because "meth" is damaging the environment, taxing our medical and legal systems, and ultimately destroying both individuals
and families. Main Reasons for Needing Legislation This paper argues that there are four main reasons for enacting legislation to deal with methamphetamine manufacture, dealing and use. First, because meth
has a harmful impact on the environment; meth labs are dangerous to those who are near them, and the manufacture of meth leaves toxic waste that gets into the water
and soil, and fumes that can be inhaled, causing health problems for those who live near the lab. Second, legislation should be enacted because crimes involving meth make up a
disproportionate number of court cases and take a lot of police time and money that could be spent on other matters. In addition, meth users often commit crimes to get
money to pay for the drug. These cases clog the court and increase the prison population to the point where it is straining to keep up with the number of
people incarcerated. This cannot continue indefinitely. Third, legislation is needed because addicts are using up valuable medical resources. And fourth, the epidemic must be controlled because meth is destroying people;
not only the user, but his family and his relationships with others. It often causes job loss, and thus begins a downward spiral that ends in jail, the streets, or
