It entails a consideration of factors such as temperature, pressure, and water vapor. It also entails a consideration of such factors as the earths rotation on its axis,
tectonic plate movement, ocean and air currents, and hydrology. Captain Robert L. Clark (2004), program manager for Operational Effects Programs, Space and Naval Welfare Systems Command emphasizes that the
importance being able to predict the weather and the various phenomena associated with it can have between success and failure and life and death. As a consequence, a great
deal of attention is given in climatology to data collection and statistical analysis. Modeling is used to predict many weather-related phenomena.
Modeling incorporates the use of numeric formulas and graphics to represent a theory and to explain the workings of that theory. CNet (2004) notes that not all models
work equally as well for the same locales and in the forecast of problems. Their function is dependent on factors such as the mathematical formulation that is employed in
the forcast equation, data representation: "model resolution (vertical levels, horizontal grid spacing, and temporal), computational
domain (what values go in the equations), and coordinate system (horizontal and vertical) (CNet, 2004).
Resolution can, in fact, vary considerably. A global model might have a resolution of 20 to 50 km while a storm-scale model would have a resolution of 100 to
100 m (CNet, 2004). Model function also depends on the "size of the domain and the scale of weather phenomenon that the model is trying to predict" (CNet, 2004).
