The agency responsible, and the method by which the transformation is achieved, are not considered important compared to the impact which the change has, both on Gregor himself and on
family. The reader is also left wondering why Gregor deserved this strange fate: his previous life does not seem to merit it. However, when we
look more closely at his life and his relationship with his family, we can suggest something of a rationale for the transformation. We can see, for instance, from the information
given about Gregors past and the conversation which takes place between his family and his boss, that there were aspects of his human life which were already rather insect-like.
We also have to bear in mind that although Gregor is often represented as a cockroach, "dung-beetle" is a more accurate translation. This effectively conveys
the idea of the patient, trudging, thankless life which Gregor has experienced as a human being. His job was superficial, materialistic and soul-destroying; Gregor did not derive spiritual meaning or
value from it but knows that because of his fathers debts, the whole family will be ruined if he gives up work. Gregor perceives himself as a helpless cog in
the company machine, and he is equally impotent in terms of his position in the family. He bears the full burden of supporting them, but cannot enjoy the privileges of
the head-of-household. His transformation is an effective escape for him. He is not sick, nor has he resigned, and therefore the company cannot
penalize him. Since he did not deliberately cause his metamorphosis, he can continue to live as an insect without feeling guilty about abandoning either work or family. Obviously there are
