apparent and vague at the same time; given the fact that each individual harbors an entirely personal approach to his or her ability to absorb information, it stands to reason
how some of the more esoteric aspects of learning are sometimes the most difficult to address. Perception and metacognition, for example, represent two quite interpretive - yet highly critical
- elements directly associated with the notion of understanding. Correlative views of metacognition as a function influencing both understanding and personal communication is a central component of Zachariades (2006)
work. Zachariades (2006) begins by outlining the existing views of what metacognition is and how thinking about metacognition influences the focus of research. Zachariades (2006) relates Georghiades (2004)
definition of metacognition as "thinking about ones own thinking" or the cognitive processes related to cognitive processes. Essentially, researchers have shaped a view of metacognition as a self-reflective process,
one in which individuals demonstrate a sophistication of cognitive process by reflecting on what they think. Metacognition, the, is a characteristic that is primarily human in nature; Zachariades reflects
on existing research that suggests that lower animal forms rarely demonstrate a self-reflective cognitive process. Researchers have also recognized the correlation between a broad view of metacognition as a self-reflective
cognitive process and metacognitive activities that relate to different functional domains or mental processes. In particular, Zachariades (2006) relates Grants (2001) view of metacognition as it can be applied
to a variety of domains in human mental functioning, including memory recall, emotional self-regulation, learning and communication. Understanding the link between metacognition and a variety of domain-specific functions provides
a solid base for separating metacognition from other biological or physiological functions in humans. In supporting the separation of cognitive processes and linking them to the ability to communicate,
