made him horrifically disfigured and often made him the ridiculing focus of many. The Elephant Man by Christine Sparks is actually a book about Merrick based on the 1980 film
of the same name by David Lynch. The following paper presents a hypothetical journal entry by Joseph Merrick as it pertains to the book by Sparks. Merricks Reaction
to The Elephant Man by Christine Sparks One of my biggest concerns about this book is that it is based on a film about me and that, in itself, presents
the reader with possibilities that are not true and possibilities that are enormously elaborated upon. For example, there is a great deal of speculation about my mother, and there is
reference to the fact that I felt she abandoned me when, in fact, she died when I was still a child. This seems to present the reader with an image
of me that is not accurate and is far weaker than I actually am, or was. Throughout this book the reader is offered images and thoughts and events that
seem to indicate I am a very vulnerable and weak person who is constantly in need of the care of others. While I am, and was, a very weak individual
from a physical perspective due to many illnesses and a propensity for illness, I was not a weak individual, even when I had difficulty speaking. I have always been sensitive
to my condition, and of course a bit insecure, which is to be expected, but I am, and was, by no means a weak individual who constantly and consistently relied
