works in the context of the world Dick created. Discussion Philip K. Dick is a difficult author and the worlds and concepts he creates are very complex. This book is
set in San Francisco in 2021, when we have polluted earth to the point where most humans have left to live in colonies in space, and those who are left
face the possibility of genetic mutation due to radiation (Schellenberg, 2004). The other problem is that androids manufactured to work off-world are returning, and they are seen as a threat
that has to be eliminated (Schellenberg, 2004). Rick Deckard, the protagonist of the novel, is a bounty hunter hired to "retire" any androids living in San Francisco (Schellenberg, 2004). After
setting up the situation and introducing the main character and themes, Dick introduces the concept of Mercerism in the second chapter. Wilbur Mercer is a shadowy figure, a spiritual leader
and a mystic; the only way to interact with him is through a device called an "empathy box" (Schellenberg, 2004). A person who grabs the handles of the box can
see Mercer, who is shown to be an old man trying to climb a hill while other figures throw rocks at him (Schellenberg, 2004). At times, the rocks that the
figures throw in the virtual reality world damage the users in the real world; thus, contacting Mercer presents a certain element of danger to the user of the empathy boxes.
