This may come from inside or outside the organisation. A mentor is defined as "A wise and trusted counsellor or teacher" (Dictonay.com, 2005). This means mentoring is a way of
transferring different types of knowledge for more with the knowledge and/or experience to those who need it. Thus is recognised as necessary to promote and develop small to medium
sized enterprises (SMEs) which not only provide a major input into the economy as a whole and are the providers as many jobs, they are also the training grounds for
my employees that will move into the larger companies. One award that realises the necessity of the transfer of knowledge is
the US National Malcolm Baldridge Quality Award. This is an annual Award given out to an American company for recognition of excellence.
Companies that receive the award have been Motorola in 1988, Milliken & Company in 1989, Cadillac Motor Car Division in 1990, Marlow Industries in 1992, AT&T in 1992, Ames Rubber
Corporation in 1993, AT&T Consumer Communications in 1994 and Armstrong World Industries in 1995 (Anonymous, 2001). When a company wins the award they
are required to share the secret of their success at the annual conference (Anonymous, 2001). The system is based on seven criteria, and even if a company is not in
