In fact, some studies performed in the early 1990s identified students with mental retardation as having a higher rate for depression disorders (Stough and Baker, 1999). Research suggests that the
psychopathology of all mental illness may be higher and more complicated due to the presence of mental retardation. In examining the problem of psychopathology in connection with mental retardation
in children and young people, the report also examines the topic from a Christian perspective. Christian view of mental illness Land (2002) points out that Christian mental health practitioners
can make a huge difference in the lives of those people suffering from mental illness by showing demonstrating for them the power of Christs love. "We can treat them as
unique individuals whom Jesus loved enough to die for" (Land, 2002). Also, through a Christians knowledge of scripture, Christian practitioners can bring an "extra, spiritual dimension" to treatment (Land, 2002).
The Land (2002) article is suggestive that the Christian practitioners take on the role of sin and Satan in human life may play a role in that practitioners view of
mental illness. One area of practice where this factor in Christian psychiatric practice may prove effective is in regards to the prevention of mental retardation, as the Christian therapist
may be able to wean expectant mothers away from negative, i.e. "sinful" behaviors through caring intervention. For example, research has shown that binge drinking of alcoholic beverages during pregnancy doubles
