be able to problem solve. David Wechsler defined intelligence as "the aggregate or global capacity of the individual to act purposefully, to think rationally, and to deal effectively with his
environment" (Cohen and Swerdlik, 2010, p. 40). Within that definition was Wechslers belief that people should know certain facts and be able to solve certain problems according to their age.
From this and based on many other theorists and intelligence instruments, including Stanford-Binet, Wechsler developed, standardized and normed the Wechsler intelligence scales for children and adults. The concept of
intelligence and IQ (intelligence quotient) is complex and it has become a bit controversial. In the early 1980s, Howard Gardner argued there were many different intelligences, hence, his multiple intelligences
theory. He initially offered seven intelligences but then added n eighth. They are bodily-kinesthetic, interpersonal, intrapersonal, linguistic, logical-mathematical, musical, naturalistic, and spatial (OTEC, 2007). There is some validity to Gardners
theory. Whichever theory one subscribes to, the fact is that there are some people in the world whose intelligence is significantly below average. The general term for these individuals
is mentally retarded or developmentally challenged. They comprise between 2 and 3 percent of the population (Daily, Ardinger, and Holmes, 2000). There are far more people who are mildly retarded
than profoundly retarded. Intelligence assessments typically have a mean average score of 100 with a standard deviation of about five to seven points so that a person with an IQ
that is in the 70s would be mildly retarded and one with an IQ of 20 would be profoundly retarded (Daily, Ardinger, and Holmes, 2000). It can be extremely
difficult to assess the academic performance of these children in a classroom. In fact, any assessment would be completed based on the IEP (individualized education plan). The IEP identifies goals
