tremendous metamorphosis over the past three centuries, with the very definition of "insanity" having encountered a most significant evolution. What was sane and what was normal was completely left
open for interpretation by the powers that be, ultimately sealing the fate of many a mentally unbalanced individual whose only crime was chemical disparity. The only way to deal
with such social deviants in colonial times was to lock them away in abominable facilities where they had no chance of treatment, much less recovery. Strapped to their beds
and handled as though they were subhuman creatures devoid of any emotions, these victims of mental illness lived out their lives within the boundaries of uncaring, ill-tempered and downright cruel
institutions. Out of this dreadful experience came the term "institutionalized," which related to the fact that once an individual entered into an asylum, he would never be able to
assimilate back into mainstream society. Today, however, mental illness has been recognized for the emotionally debilitating disease it is, as well as the basis upon which deviant behavior is
performed. Indeed, there is no argument that mothers who kill their children suffer from mental illness, yet it is the manner by which they mask and carry out their
homicidal plans without loved ones becoming suspicious that has society more up in arms than ever over the escalating problem. III. METHODOLOGY
