This 14 page paper considers the link between juvenile offenders and mental illness. The paper assesses the level of the problem, the extent of the link and the types of mental illness noted in juveniles. Using schizophrenia and ADHD as examples the paper demonstrated how and why detection of mental illness and treatment is so important and why this should be adopted as a priory by the criminal justice system. However, one area of research that has been prevalent in adult studies has been lacking in the juvenile area; the presence, impact and ways of dealing with mental illness
in juveniles (Cocozza and Skowyra, 2000). There is a general recognition in many studies that this is an area where there is a chasm of data, smaller studies have taken
place and the data is increasing, but unlike the adult equivalent studies the same depth and breadth has not been achieved, as such the issue tends to receive less attention
by the social systems that come into contact with the juveniles and the criminal justice system (National Mental Health Association , 2004, Cocozza and Skowyra, 2000, CJJ, 2000). The
first consideration should be the defining of juvenile and mental illness health. In general terms a juvenile is an individual who has not yet reached the age of majority.
IN most states and countries this is the age of 18 years. Even where a juvenile is tried as a adult due to the nature of the crime they are
still classified as a juvenile for the purposes of this paper. The definition of mental illness is more problematic. There is no single fully inclusive definition of mental illness.
Slovenko (1989) argues for a very broad ranging definition which states that mental illness is "substantial disorder of mood or thought which significantly impairs judgment, behavior, capacity to recognize reality
