In Platos Meno, the dialogue is concerned with the nature of virtue and the way in which human beings acquire their knowlegde of moral principles. In Greek thought, the concept
of arete (virtue) is connected with particular skills: it is the ability which allows a craftsman to produce a work of art, or a farmer to grow good crops. From
this point of view it is evident that virtue will differ from one individual to another, and will also be dependent on the aims of the particular person. Different people
not only have different skills and abilities, in the sense that a woodcarver will not necessarily be successful at growing crops, but they also perceive different activities as virtuous at
different times.
However, Socrates wishes to establish a definition of virtue which is universal, in the same way as good health can be considered as universal, and which can encompass
within itself such ideas as courage and moderation. This would therefore account for the variation between individuals, but at the same time offer a common definition within which all the
different aspects of individual virtue can be seen to be included. Meno offers the suggestion that virtue can be defined as the wish for good things, but Socrates contends that
whereas the desire for good may be common to all, the virtue which people actually demonstrate varies from one individual to another.
