Essay / Research Paper Abstract

3 pages in length. As a way to oust someone who behaves immorally or against the stringent structure of the culture, Mennonite shunning is a many-centuries old tradition whereby those who stray from cultural dictates are cast out from the core unit by method of avoidance. In short, a shunned person is ignored as though he or she does not exist, a wholly polarizing experience that can be compared to wild animals who cast reject certain members of their community for certain circumstances. The purpose of this long-standing practice is to use shame as a motivation for repentance. According to Jakob Amman's teachings, Mennonites who are in good repute with the community are not permitted to interact with a shunned person in such situations as eating with, buying from or selling to that individual, nor can spouses sleep with their shunned spouses.
