Meningococcal meningitis presents a number of concerns in family nursing. It is one of several types of infections that can cause meningitis,
the inflammation of the tissues that surround the brain and spinal cord (Australian Government Department of Health and Aging, 2004). Meningococcal meningitis is particularly prevalent among children that are
younger than five years of age as well as in adolescents and young adults that fall between the ages of fifteen to twenty-four (Australian Government Department of Health and Aging,
2004). Babies, in particular, can succumb to this condition quite rapidly (The Meningitis Center, 2003). Its signs and symptoms include fever, cold extremities, vomiting or the refusal of
food, discomfort when being handled, fretfulness and irritability, lethargy and difficult to wake up, limpness, the retraction of the neck or the arching of the back, listful expression, and even
convulsions (The Meningitis Center, 2003). The presence of a pale or blotchy complexion or a rash presents additional evidence of meningococcal infection (The Meningitis Center, 2003). Australian Nursing
Council competency cues (ANCIs) serve as an important foundation for the care of these patients and their families. The ANCI Competency Unit 4
demands that nurses accept accountability and responsibility for their actions in nursing. To do so we must be able to formulate our actions around specific knowledge of the disease
