always suffered, in one way or another, from an iability to communicate, but it also illustrates to us the history of where men and women sit in the social realm
of any given culture. The following paper examines Homers "The Iliad" and Sophocles "Antigone" comparing how the two portray men and women. The Iliad In The Iliad our primary
character is Achilles. He is "a fierce Greek warrior who is driven by such emotions as pride, honor, revenge, and, too often, rage. He is the epitome of the great
warriors of his time" (The Iliad: Character Summary of Homers The Iliad). He represents all that is masculine, all that is righteous and all that is clearly patriarchal. The
foundation of the story rests strongly on gender conflict as it involves a beauty contest between "the goddesses Aphrodite, Hera and Athena" (The Iliad: Character Summary of Homers The Iliad).
The women are portrayed, although goddesses, as women who want to be the prettiest and thus try to bribe Paris. Paris chooses Aphrodite because she has promised him the hand
of Helen of Troy in marriage if she wins. This starts the war. In this we see that the war is being fought over a woman, Helen, considered to
be the most beautiful mortal woman. And, the war was begun because of a beauty contest. In this we are given the impression that men are the powers and women,
even goddesses who possess great power, are merely things to be looked at and owned if possible. At the same time, some of the women are portrayed as very powerful,
