the title of the compilation would suggest, and they are stories of struggle and life. The following paper examines some of the plots, characterization, points of view, setting and symbolism
found in some of the short stories in the work. Men Without Women Again, as the title suggests, these are stories that involve men without women. While women are
present in some of the stories, the title of the book indicates that it is truly a compilation of stories about men without women, or in some cases, men and
how they feel about women and perhaps not needing them in their lives. Some of the stories in the book are "The Undefeated," "In Another Country," "Hills Like White Elephants,"
"The Killers," "A Pursuit Race," "Today is Friday," "Banal Story," and "Now I Lay Me." The characters in the stories are men, for the most part, and they are
generally somewhat distant men who have a silent sadness or emptiness about them. For example, in the story "In Another Country" the men in a hospital, recovering from wounds inflicting
during battle, are all kind of empty individuals. In "the Killers" we have rather unemotional men dealing with a hit they are going to put on some man. In "Hills
Like White Elephants" we have a man and a woman, although the characters are an American Man and a Girl, wherein the man is seemingly uninvolved with the woman
to a large extent. The men in these stories are men dealing with very intricate issues, issues that deal with their manhood, their life, and their futures. In most cases
there seems to be no future for any of Hemingways characters. The points of view vary to some extent, but they all come from men. In the story "In
