John Grays book, "Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus", stands out as one of the most memorable
in history. Quite possibly, however, the book is memorable more as a result of its catchy title than by the facts that it has been widely read or that
it is regarded as groundbreaking in the type of information and approach it encapsulates. Title aside, Grays book does present an interesting view of gender relations, a view worthy
of additional consideration. Grays extensive experience as a relationship counselor has certainly given him ample opportunity to observe the relationships between men and women. Unfortunately, his almost constant
use of comical analogies and metaphors serve more to dilute the important content of the book than to effectively illustrate it. As an added annoyance, Gray insists on repeating
his core ideas over and over in almost identical scenarios throughout his book. He justifies this repetition on the fact that for an individual to learn something he must
review it some two hundred times. Such generalization is, in fact, a major overall flaw of this potentially useful book. Gray chooses
to characterize men as Martians, creatures who are competent when it comes to activities which require manual skills and strength but who melt in the face of any sort of
emotional interaction with others of their species. Women in Grays book are Venusians, creatures who have all the opposite qualities of men. According to Grays views women are
better at interacting with one another and other beings in general than are men. Women like one-on-one involvement or even group interaction while men prefer to isolate themselves from
