time, as well as our perceptions later in recalling the memories, are very subjective to many different things. In essence, memory is not always accurate and it is surely debatable
in many cases. With that in mind the following paper examines the failure and/or successes of memory in Georges Perecs work "W or the Memory of Childhood." W
or the Memory of Childhood Georges Perecs work "W or the Memory of Childhood" is, at first, a very confusing work to read. It is a work that is actually
comprised of a boys fantasy world and a boys attempt to remember what happened during WWII when his mother and father were killed and he was left to experience the
fears and atrocities of war. With this basic foundation in mind we can clearly understand that the story itself is a unique presentation of memory and what memory is all
about for at least one young child who cannot accurately remember all of his experiences. This is likely due to the fact that the fear and confusion he experienced clouded
his perception of the events, thus helping keep him psychologically safe in an potentially destructive time. The mind, as most of us know, has a way of protecting itself against
horrible experiences, trying to find a way to forget and sometimes completely eliminating any memory of the events. This is what Perecs work seems to offer the reader. In
terms of specifics in the story we note that Perec was a young boy when his father was killed in battle, fighting the Nazi invasion. His mother was hauled off
