Morag has a quirky personality and a good sense of humor. In fact, it is perhaps the humor that prompts the reader to turn the pages. Yet, the author creates
a larger than life character who like Laurence is a novelist. It is rather interesting when a writer writes about the mind of the writer, but Morags unusual take on
things is truly refreshing. In the work, Morag journeys back to her youth in her mind and confronts many issues, inclusive of abuse and sexual immorality. Morag is also a
mother and she thinks back while comforting her own teenage daughters problems. Again, it is not atypical for a mother to face issues of youth when her own children are
at a particular developmental stage. For Morag, her teenager daughters own journey prompts a look at herself, but her fight is a bit different from her daughters and it should
be said that this is more than just a phase. Morag truly makes breakthroughs by calling on old memories. As a child who was adopted, Morag does have additional issues
that others might not. Still, many people at midlife confront the subject of mortality and take a romp through their sordid past. However, this inquiry is something more. It is
attached to religion and doctrine and the canon. In fact, any individuals memories may be tied to the larger puzzle that plagues humanity. According to a student, "in his
defense of the Western Canon, Bloom contends, the Canon is the true art of memory. He claims that, at its most basic level, the Canon consists of the
image of the individual thinking in ways where mortality combines with memory to reconfigure an individuals awareness of themselves." To a large extent, this describes Morags journey towards self-awareness.
