on several people, the most important being Sethe. The story involves the life of Sethe as a freewoman and as a slave, the story of Sethe as a mother and
a murderer. Sethe is a woman who has, at one point in her past, killed her infant child to save the girl from the pain and oppression of slavery. This
baby comes back to haunt her, perhaps providing her with the choice to accept her past and move on, or to fall prey to the darkness and guilt of that
past. Morrison often uses "rememory" and "disremember" in her work to subtly and powerfully illustrate how Sethe sees, experiences, and relates to her past. The following paper examines the use
of these two unique words as they relate to the development of Sethe in relationship to hope or despair. Rememory and Disremember The words "rememory" and "disremember" are words
that Morrison has essentially created, or used uniquely, in her work to illustrate how the character of Sethe deals with her past and her present. In the notion of rememory
we are offered a manner in which Sethes memories are made real in the present, indicating that she is very much living that past by remembering it, not just simply
remembering what happened. With disremember she is primarily taking a memory and pushing it away so that it will not become real to the character of Sethe. When we understand
Sethes problems in relationship to her time as a slave and the murdering of her infant we see how and why Sethes memories become so important in her simple survival.
