Though there is a considerable amount of research still to be done in regards to the structures of the brain and the impacts on memory function, a number of studies,
including brain imaging, human neuropathology, and cognitive studies, have served to advance the general populations understanding of human memory. Kerekhazi (2006) argues that like the structures of the brain,
memory is an area of neuroscience that still requires considerable research. The human memory is a very complex system that is not fully understood. It is affected by neurobiological factors,
psychological factors and cognitive factors. There is a vast amount of information about the human memory and how it develops, which is outlined by Kerekhazi (2006) through a view of
the current literature. Memory ability incorporates numerous interacting systems functioning at different levels, including motivation systems, attention, neurotransmitters and hormones (Cardoso, 2002). As a result, defining, mapping and understanding
these systems are both difficult and requires a broader view of the function of the brain as a whole. Kerekhazi (2006) argues that memory is a function that is
often not thought about when it is working well, but is often reflected upon when impairments exist. This may actually be one of the greatest truths of modern research;
systems for understanding memory were left primarily to psychological theories until memory impairments (e.g. Alzheimers) began to end the productivity of great minds. As memory impairments have become a
significant focus of the aging population, the development of memory research and the focus on memory function as a neurophysiological process has been shaped by the need to find a
"cure." Kerekhazi (2006) touches on some of the research that has been conducted surrounding brain research, memory research and the bringing together of an interdisciplinary approach to understanding memory.
