Potter, Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of South Florida, Dr. Potter discussed the current research on Alzheimers disease and dementia, which suggests that scientists are on
the brink of understanding the mechanisms that cause this cognitive dysfunction. Current evidence that there is a genetic component in these diseases, but also that environment does play a role
("Special Report" 10). Potter states that "We are just beginning to understand...that advanced education and a cognitively stimulating lifestyle" offers a degree of protection against these diseases ("Special Report" 10).
Furthermore, nutrition seems to be involved as antioxidants and the use of anti-inflammatory drugs also appear to offer protective factors ("Special Report" 10). A fascinating study that was conducted on
the influence of environment on Alzheimers concerned a study sample of nuns, and has, therefore, come to be referred to as the "Nun study" ("Special Report" 10). Researchers discovered that
the amount of amyloid in the brain, which refers to the "deposits that seem to kill nerve cells," was not perfectly correlated to the individuals cognitive status ("Special Report" 10).
There were nuns with lots of amyloid and no cognitive or memory problems, which suggests that a cognitively stimulating lifestyle does influence the course of disease ("Special Report" 10). Therefore
it seems reasonable to predict that scientists will soon understand much more about the causes of these diseases and also how to protect against them through lifestyle changes. How
