communion. Though the church was as familiar to me as my own home, my first communion was the first time I felt a part of the church community and
a part of the religious process. I was 13 years old when I participated in catechism classes under the direction of Father Ramirez and Sister Stevens, both part
of the St. Marys clergy. For 10 afternoons, I sat with my friends Rosa, Eloise, and Marianna and learned about the teachings of the church. I remember vividly
the smell of the old Bibles, prayer books and hymnals. The church basement where our classes were held was cold and damp and father Ramirez often started a small
heater in one corner of the room to warm it up. Sister Stevens reminded us constantly that the church was a place of honor, a place where religion
and God came together and a place where we could learn to become closer to God. I remember Sister Stevens repeatedly talking with us about the value of religious
services and asked us all to think about whether we wanted to become a part of the order of nuns. St. Marys had a convent and convent school, that
both Rosa and Marianna attended. Father Ramirez and Sister Stevens spent long hours in that basement classroom teaching us about the Bible, the story of Christs life and
the role that God should play in the lives of the faithful. I remember thinking that there was so much that was hard in the world and that church
