A Self-Portrait of Small-Town Japan by Junichi Saga is a collection of stories, memories actually, of what life was like in the twenties in a rural village in Japan.
The stories span the possibilities of experience from birth to death as well as politics to family life. It is a compilation of the experiences of life. One
aspect that is especially interesting is the portrayal of patriarchal society and the establishment of gender roles based on a historical context. The result of the patriarchal society has
been the cultural devaluation of women. Patriarchy is an established system that is male centered as well as male dominated Male-dominated means that positions of authority and
power are generally reserved for men. In patriarchy, control, strength, competitiveness, and rationality are reserved for the males of the society. Patriarchy is a cultural phenomenon that diminishes
women and glorifies men. The Samarai culture of Japan has been credited with the intensity of the patriarchal balance of power, however, Samurai culture included women as well
as men. It seems, especially after reading the stories in Memories of Silk And Straw, that the class distinction and level of poverty has added to the fervor of
male dominance. Women as a group have been historically disadvantaged relative to men of their race, class, ethnicity, or sexual identity. The gender roles of wife and mother
