write about who she or he knows best. At the same time, it sometimes poses a challenge, particularly if the work is intended for publication. One must reveal parts of
themselves that perhaps have remained hidden up until the work is written. McCarthy seemingly does this with no reservations or apologies. An extraordinary writer, McCarthy uses the unusual technique of
italicizing portions of the work to effect a contrast. This has proven to be an extremely valuable technique. McCarthy says that religion is only good for good people. Her upbringing
explains this message more accurately, and further tells a story that permeates the boundaries of what is nice and what is not. McCarthy holds nothing back; she writes about her
scarred youth with an almost religious fervor, creating distinctions with the use of italics. This technique, though not often employed by writers, is quite effective. It is further ideal in
this work as the author is expressing her own life, how she grew up, how she went to school and her struggles with her extended family. The use of italicized
writing should not be minimized. It is an important, deliberate technique employed for the sake of contrast. It further makes reading easier and the points are more readily understood by
the reader. McCarthys life was in and of itself heartbreaking. She was an orphan by the age of six and reared by grandparents. The author had been educated in a
Catholic school, an important point in reviewing the works. McCarthy of course is not the only author to expound on a Catholic upbringing. There have been many before and after
her as well. Alanis Morisette sung about her Catholic childhood in the jagged little pill CD and Billy Joel railed against the Catholic girls who ?start much too late?
