that we are not alone in our problems, our struggles, and our trying times. By reading the life stories of others, we learn to put our own lives into
perspective and to see our lives for what they are. This is indeed part of the importance of works such as
Maya Angelous Heart of a Woman and Harriet Jacobs Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl. These are the life stories of women who have lived difficult lives
- lives fraught with struggle, despair, heartache, and oppression. And yet, what stands out about these women through the retelling of their life story, is the strength and tenacity
which resides in the hearts of both of these women. In this way then, the fact that each of these women chose
to write their memoirs is indeed a gift to the world. The gift they offer is their own example, from which others can draw strength and inspiration. The
importance of this and the impact are both very deep. When one lights a candle by which others can draw warmth, light, and inspiration, then one is truly living
a very large life. In the end, both of these women have shown by example, that the struggles which life presents can
indeed be overcome. As they use their memoirs to show how they personally have overcome lifes struggles, they inspire others to do the same. Others reading their stories
