happen, what could happen, and what should happen in relationship to diverse cultures. In light of this it is quite obvious that the topic of cultures as it relates to
interaction with other cultures, is quiet a complex topic. The following paper examines two different approaches/beliefs/theories concerning cultural interaction. The paper discusses the Melting Pot Theory and then discusses Cultural
Pluralism. The paper ends with an examination of how the two are different. Melting Pot Theory We often hear the term "melting pot" in reference to the United
States. This is because many consider the United States to be the great melting pot of cultures. The theory, or phrase, can often be traced back to a man named
J. Hector de Crevecoeur who was a French settler back in 1782. He looked at the United States and saw it as a land of opportunity, like most, but also
saw it as a great pot where many different cultural individuals were melting to become one, a new race of men, Americans (Laubeova, 2000). This was because America, or the
United States, embraced all people from all over Europe. It was believed that all of these people would come into the United States, marry outside their own cultures, and after
several generations a new culture would be the force of the United States. This Melting Pot Theory assumes that all cultures will essentially interbreed and eventually there will be no
