at the University of Toronto and now lives in Canada (Descant). Consequently, her fiction is anthologized in both American and Canadian collections. Her short fiction has been included in Best
Canadian Short Stories and in two volumes of American short stories, Best American Short Stories 1999 and Best American Short Stories 2002. Hardy has also published two novels (Descant).
Hardy is an author of extraordinary power. Her stories of the American frontier, for example, remind the reader that this time in North American history was neither "quaint or picturesque"
(DeZelar-Tiedman). Her tales of traders, trappers and burdened women are often harsh and focus on the "struggle, brutality and greed" that characterized life during the Porcupine gold rush that occurred
in Northern Ontario during the early 1900s (Schieffer). A theme that appears to run through all of Hardys stories is the manner in which she delves into the psychological landscape
of her characters. For example, in "The Heifer," Hardy describes the romantic imaging that first lead young Aina to marry Uwe, who has immigrated from Finland, and then her
painful awakening to reality as she realizes that the man she imagined actually never existed. Finding that their existence is hard and that they have nothing in common, they turn
constantly to the topic of the beautiful heifer that Uwe has purchased as a present for his bride. The cow cannot be separated from the herd till it is a
little older. Uwe speaks of the cow whenever he feels guilty for bringing Aina to "tarpaper shack in the middle of a frozen wilderness so glaringly white that it razed
the corneas of a mans eye" (Heifer 101). As this illustrates, Hardy takes an omniscient narrative viewpoint that makes the inner thoughts of her characters open to her readers.
