a powerful classic. It is a film in whose cast we see no one of any powerful character. We do not necessarily like any of the individuals we meet, and
perhaps in that we are happy that the birds are destroying their little negative world. Melanie is one of those characters. She is a spoiled, frigid, yet sexual woman who
presents herself as more than she is. In the following paper we examine her character and then discuss how her characters ideology, with the help of "Understanding Movies" by Louis
Giannetti, helps the director create a masterpiece. Melanie As mentioned, Melanie is essentially a spoiled rich woman. She has perhaps gotten everything she ever wanted, but she is
not the type to be happy with anything she has. She is a shallow and dysfunctional woman who wants her man, but is not necessarily willing to open up and
be a real human being. Melanie is working on taking a man that another woman loves, or thinks she loves. Melanie wants Mitch, a man completely under the control
of his mother. But, we really do not necessarily believe that Melanie wants this man. She just wants something, and Mitch is the best thing available at this point.
Like the other characters, Melanie does not really change or evolve in the story, save at the end when she has perhaps lost her mind as Mitch drives her away.
Melanie does not learn anything about herself, or anything about anyone else around her. She is a very stagnant character, as are all the others in the film. In
