modern yet historical city in detail. ISTANBUL For some people the thoughts of Turkey are the "sounds and smells of the fish market, the cool of a caf? near
a mosque and alleyways heading towards the sea filled with vessels of all sizes" (Gursel, 1999, 3). The skyline of Istanbul is described as being that of "slender minarets,
castles, ramparts, towers and office buildings" (Gursel, 1999, 3). The water of the Bosphorus that flows through Istanbul is a deep rich blue color and adds to the ambiance
of the city. The trees are thick and lovely, becoming quite numerous, and the roads become narrow and buildings closer together as one gets deeper into the old city
(Gursel 1999). The market at Karakoy Square in Istanbul reminds one of the old markets of Paris. They are loud and filled with people bustling to and fro among
the fresh vegetables, fish, dried fruits and nuts, smoked and salted meats and cheese. Istanbul is located on the Bosphorus Straits, on the European shore. It is on
both the land and sea routes of Asia and Europe. Istanbul has the advantage of being on the Black Sea as well as the Mediterranean. The large city
of Istanbul is Turkeys main manufacturing center as well as the main commercial hub and port. With a population of about twelve million the city is Turkeys fastest growing
