This 46 page paper examines the housing needs and the housing provision in the UK for the Asian community. The paper looks at the divergent needs of the Asian community and the ways in which the UK housing provisions are failing to meet all of these needs. The paper comprises of an in-depth literature review that assesses the shortfall between provision and needs in all areas of the housing market; social housing, private rented accommodation and owner-occupied accommodation. The paper then shows the student how to undertake primary research with a suggested questionnaire and an analysis of the expected results. The bibliography cites 21 sources.

welfare state through social housing programmes. In the UK this is through provision of accommodation owned by local authorities and housing associations. The Asian community is a sector of the
community that appears to be under represented in social housing sectors. The reasons for this are numerous, including many barriers to accessing this type of accommodation as well as social,
cultural and geographical needs. Home ownership in the Asian community, especially in the Indian segment is higher than that seen in the general population due to the barriers that
exist. However, there are also many barriers to owner occupied housing and finding housing that meets a families needs regardless of ownership. The Asian community have many different needs,
some of which arise due to their status as an ethnic minority, such as the desire for community or the fear of isolation. Other needs arise from cultural values, such
as the need for larger accommodation with extended families living together. It is only by understanding the housing needs and how the current gaps between provision and need that the
future policies can be developed. This paper shows how the needs of the Asian community are not being met, that the need is genuine and stills exist and how, despite
government polices which focus on nuclear families, there have been some projects which meet the needs of the Asian community, allowing families to remain close and create community whilst allowing
for integration.
