the world, which are often overwhelming, and get back in touch with their inner selves. This paper is not a "how to" essay on techniques of meditation; instead it discusses
the impact place can have on meditation, and argues that it is important to allow all feelings that come up to be expressed. Discussion Most people who meditate do so
in the privacy of their own homes in a space they have created as a "sanctuary." This paper, however, considers quite a different place: the beaches of Savannah, Georgia. Savannah
is an old city, founded in 1733 by General James Oglethorpe as a place to give the English working poor a new start (Savannahs history, 2010). Because Oglethorpe became friends
with the local Yamacraw Indian chief, a gentleman named Tomochichi who pledged his goodwill to the newcomers, the new colony was spared the warfare common to the rest of the
Colonies (Savannahs history, 2010). Tomochichi gave his permission for the settlers to built their city on the bluff overlooking the Savannah River, and one of the most gracious and beautiful
cities in the world was born (Savannahs history, 2010). Savannah is a planned city, laid out as a series of grids that "allowed for wide open streets intertwined with
shady public squares and parks"; there were 24 such squares at the beginning of the citys history and 22 still survive (Savannahs history, 2010). The green open spaces, wide boulevards,
