Meditation is one of the most phenomenally powerful tools available in our modern world. It is also a tool that has found wide usage throughout
history. Meditation is employed both in a religious perspective and in a coping perspective. Though the act of meditation people have been able to transcend the boundaries of
everyday experience throughout history. Although it is impossible to prove given the lack of written documentation, it can be asserted that this has been the case since the beginning
of time. Meditation has ranged from personal self-designed pursuits to organized religions. Buddhism offers an excellent example of the value of meditation but it is just one example.
Meditation is widely used in a number of aspects of daily life and is certain to maintain a position of importance in our lives in the future as well.
Now popularly known as transcendental meditation (transcendental meaning that the supernatural aspects of our world are more important than the physical realities of
our world which we experience through our five basic senses), meditation is the practice of mentally concentrating on the spiritual or supernatural components of our existence. From a historical
perspective meditation has played a tremendously important role even in the United States. The influence of transcendentalism on the spiritual growth and development of the United States is a
fascinating topic and one which calls to mind the very basis upon which this country was formed. The influence is particularly interesting during the period spanning 1810-1860. It
