have shown that the bodily changes associated with meditation can have beneficial effects on overall health. This is generally attributed to the ability of meditation to reduce stress (Cantor 1049).
There are numerous meditation traditions, but a common feature of all them is that they encompass exercises that provide the individual with a single object for the minds attention (Johnson
B10). The beginner concentrates on the elementary task of breathing, simply being aware of the process of breathing in and out (Johnson B10). The point of this concentration is
that it will eventually flow "seamlessly" into deep meditation. Various schools of meditation employ different images on which the practitioner concentrates. Some of these are visual; some are spoken (Johnson
B10). Transcendental meditation became popular in many countries during the 1970s. This form of meditation was developed in the 1950s by the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, a Hindu monk. People practicing
transcendental meditation sit quietly and focus their attention on repeating a mantra, which is generally a word taken from Hindu scripture (Johnson B10). The goal is to obtain pure
consciousness where the mind is not aware of anything in particular. During mediation, breathing slows and practitioners tend to produce alpha brain waves, which is a sign of extreme relaxation.
In Zen Buddhism, which also emphasizes the practice of meditation, the increased awareness that comes from this activity is referred to as "mindfulness" (Weinberg 33). In this philosophical context,
