the cultures of Islam were also part of that time period, and a very important part. In essence, Medieval times were not specific to the West, but a time involving
all people. In this time period there was great conflict between the West and Islam as each seemed unable to truly understand or accept the "other" they saw in one
another. The following paper examines the interactions and apparent beliefs of the West and of Islam as it involved the "other," as well as their perceptions of self, from approximately
650 to 1450. The paper examines their identity and their perception of "other" through looking at religious, personal, and economic/political perspectives. Medieval Times: The West and Islam Religious
Although both sides of the topic believed in essentially one God, their views were different, if similar, and that caused a great deal
of problems. It was also something that led many to perhaps see similarities for they are both religions, based on the Bible and the Quran, that encouraged generosity and kindness
to "others." But as is often the case in societies that conflict they were more inclined to see differences, and the righteous position of their own religion. In the first
examination of this there is a letter written by Leo III to Umar II which states the following: "In brief you admit that we say that it [i.e., the Quran]
was written by God, and brought down from the heavens, as you pretend for your furqan, although we know that it was `Umar, Abu Turab and Salman the Persian, who
