The form of the Song of Roland, an epic poem from that era, probably found its final! form by the end of the eleventh century and by that point the historical basis of the story had practically disappeared. Charlemagne was thirty-six when the actual event occurred. In the Song of Roland, Charlemagne is pictured as an old man with a flowing beard (OHagan PG). The Basques disappeared and the Saracens took their place and Roland had become the nephew of Charlemagne (OHagan PG). The Song of Roland is the first of the great French heroic poems that are known as "chansons de geste" (OHagan PG). Numerous versions of the epic have survived to the present day, which demonstrates its wide popularity and suggests how the epic varied from one location to another, one country to another (Jones 4). The exact form and content of the Song of Roland varied because it was part of the oral tradition of medieval troubadours long before it was ever written down. To use Si!r Philip Sidney phrase pertaining to the oral traditions of epic poetry, it was an art form "which holdeth children from play and old men from the chimney corner" (Vance 1). Epic poetry was the "action adventure" genre of its day.
